A portrait can look convincing until you notice an extra finger, a fused thumb or a hand passing through a cup. Fixing AI-generated hands requires more than asking for “perfect hands.” The repair has to make sense in the context of the pose, the object and the rest of the image.
Inspect the whole interaction first
Look at the image at its intended display size, then zoom into the hand. Trace the wrist into the palm, locate the thumb and follow each visible finger. Occluded fingers do not all need to be visible. What matters is whether the visible structure and contact with nearby objects make sense.
- Structure: are there extra digits, fused shapes or joints bending in incompatible directions?
- Contact: does the hand hold, rest on or point at the object convincingly?
- Continuity: do skin tone, sleeve, lighting and wrist position match the surrounding image?
- Purpose: does the gesture communicate what the scene needs?
The same review method helps with malformed toes and other small anomalies: inspect the full structure and the surrounding context rather than correcting an isolated patch of pixels.
Choose regeneration, inpainting or a different shot

A crop works only if the remaining composition is useful. It is not a solution when the hand is the evidence—for example, when the image is supposed to show someone operating a clasp or pressing a specific control.
Simplify the pose before adding more prompt words
Replace multiple simultaneous actions with one clear relationship. “Holding a phone, opening a bag and pointing at the screen” is a harder scene to review than “one hand resting beside a phone on a table.” Preserve the subject, lighting and framing while changing the action that caused the failure.
Here is an original example brief for a fictional adult creator:
Seated at a wooden café table in soft window light. One relaxed hand rests flat beside a ceramic mug. The other hand remains outside the frame. Chest-up composition, plain sleeve, uncluttered background.
This example is a proposed starting point, not a tested recipe or a guarantee of correct anatomy. Compare the next output against the same review checklist.
Repair a localized error with inpainting
In a compatible inpainting workflow, mask the region that needs to be regenerated. Include enough wrist, object edge or surrounding area for a coherent transition. A mask covering only the tip of an extra finger may leave the underlying structural problem intact.
ComfyUI’s Mask Editor can be opened from a Load Image node. The official inpainting tutorial shows a compatible model and masked encoding setup. Follow the model-specific graph; mask behavior and sampling controls are not identical across every model family.
- Keep the approved original and duplicate the working graph.
- Mask the complete problem area with some boundary context.
- Describe the intended pose and object relationship briefly.
- Generate a small comparison set while recording your settings.
- Reject repairs that improve fingers but break the wrist, sleeve or product.

Approve the repair before upscaling or animation
Upscaling can make a malformed hand more visible. Video can introduce a new error even when the first frame is acceptable. Approve the still first, then inspect the enlarged export or the entire resulting clip separately.
For a short clip, review the start, transitions and ending, paying particular attention to moments of contact. Do not approve a five-second interaction from its thumbnail. Keep a repair note identifying the failed area and the accepted replacement so the next batch starts from the better source.
