For a related production step, use the ease in and ease out.
A moving graphic that stops exactly at its target can feel crisp. Carrying it slightly past the target before returning creates a different rhythm. Overshoot is useful when that rhythm serves the object or performance, but it can become distracting when every move wobbles in the same way.
What is overshoot in animation
Overshoot moves a value beyond its intended endpoint before returning. It can affect position, rotation, scale or another animated property. A pointing hand may pass its final angle, or a stylized interface element may go slightly beyond its resting position. The audience should still understand the intended target.
The Blender F-curve documentation describes Back easing that can overshoot and return. Our original example instead uses a deliberately authored two-part smoothstep path. It makes the excursion and correction easy to inspect without claiming to reproduce a spring or Blender's exact curve.
Watch one overshoot and correction
Watch this clip and view its details
The dashed line marks X = 520. The reference graphic moves from X = 100 to the target without passing it, arriving on source frame 20. The effect path reaches X = 560 at frame 12, then returns to X = 520 at frame 20. Frames 20–23 hold the target position.
The two paths share the starting point, final target and final arrival deadline, but their intermediate timing differs. That difference is intentional. This example has one excursion and one correction, not repeated oscillation, measured elasticity or a simulated mass.
Use the free overshoot position lab
- Inspect frame 12 for the maximum excursion.
- Adjust overshoot distance from zero to 80 source pixels.
- Compare the effect with the reference at the same frame.
- Step toward frame 20 to inspect the return to the target.
- Download the displayed SVG and the complete position CSV.
With overshoot distance set to zero, the effect still reaches the target at frame 12 and holds there; it does not become identical to the reference, which arrives at frame 20. Use the effect toggle when you want the actual reference timing. Changing the distance and changing the arrival time are separate decisions.

Separate overshoot from anticipation and follow-through
| Technique | Where to look | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Anticipation | Before the main action | Does the preparation clarify what comes next |
| Overshoot | Beyond the intended target | Does the excursion improve the movement's rhythm |
| Follow-through | Parts continuing after a leading movement | Do related elements stop together or at different times |
A character can use more than one principle in a single action. Keep the review focused: if the torso stops but a sleeve continues, that is a different observation from the entire body passing its endpoint. Do not use an effect label to excuse a foot sliding through the floor or a changed prop shape.
Choose the amount for the material and purpose
A soft mascot or playful title may support a visible excursion. A precise product placement or serious dramatic beat may need a more restrained stop. Check the silhouette, delivery scale and time available for the viewer to recognize the final pose.
For a graphic, choose the resting position first, then set the excursion and correction. For a character action, approve the final pose and prop contact before experimenting with expressive movement. A readable endpoint is more valuable than a large effect that leaves the scene uncertain.
Plan an AI-assisted settle without promising exact curves
The original soft mascot slides into its marked position, passes the mark slightly and corrects once to a clear final pose. Preserve its approved shape and identity. Keep the floor fixed and end at rest without a repeated wobble or extra movement.
This is an original untested direction. Use a supported operation in Clout Image and Video for a small pilot, then inspect the actual returned file. If exact target coordinates or curve values matter, use an animation editor or rig rather than assuming a text prompt supplies that control.
For preparation before the movement, use anticipation animation. For reviewing the drawings, use onion-skin overlays. Keep the accepted source, target pose and final export together so a later revision does not change the character while fixing the timing.
